Says Dr. Jack Stephens, a veterinarian who founded and heads Veterinarian Pet insurance...."All our premiums are comparable". He says that his company offers two types of policies...standard and superior.
A standard policy starts at $78 per year for a cat and $109 per year for a dog, with the costs rising each year as the pet ages to a high of around $300 per year. The policy will pay out a maximum of $9,000 per year.
A superior policy starts at $159 per year for a cat and $198 per year for a dog one year of age or younger. Again, the cost rises with the pets age, to a maximum of around $500 a year. The maximum payout is $14,000 per year.
Both policies cover more than 6,000 procedures.....everything from lacerations to pacemakers for dogs and kidney transplants for cat...but they don't cover routine visits for things like vaccinations, spaying or neutering.
"We don't cover pre-existing conditions, but if your vet says the animal is now cured, even it it was cancer, we will cover it." says Dr. Stephens.
Costs for some veterinarian procedures now rival those performed on humans! $4000 for kidney transplants on cats.
Dogs are having heart surgery that can costs more than $10,000! Canine pacemakers can set owners back some $1500 while some hip replacements can cost more than $3,000. When you see costs like that, it only makes sense to have pet health insurance!
