Meet Darby's Ring of Fire. Darby was one of our founding Standard Poodles when we first began creating our Goldendoodles. Sadly, Darby passed away in his sleep July 27th, 2008. Darby was a solid white standard Poodle & this boy was a real charmer! Very personable with a gentle temperament. Darby was approx. 55 lbs and stood approx. 22.5" at the withers. He had sired some of the prettiest Goldendoodles for us for many years since 1999. Darby shared a great pedigree with Scisco's kid, another one of our founding Standard Poodle sires. Both Darby and Scisco were retired and neutered in April 2007. Scisco's kid is getting some much needed rest as a father. Darby's grandfather was Von Moordon's Alex of Excel......Scisco's father. Darby fit the german standard where a poodle is concerned. He had a wider head, stockier build and mid-size muzzle. His muzzle was not thin like most poodles. Darby had a really nice build! Plenty of character and was very loving! His coat was very curly. Our two Poodle dams, Rosie and Rosebud share Alex of Excel as their father, but have a different mother than both Darby & Scisco. Below are some names that Darby has in his pedigree on his grandmother's side. You will most likely see familiar names since Darby's grandfather is Scisco's father. He also shares ancestors with Blackie , Cocoa, Rosie and Rosebud and all of our other Poodles, but they are distant ancestors and NOT close, immediate ancestors.

This is Darby when he was younger and had just returned home from our vet's office. Darby got a clean bill of health , a complete shave down, dip & microchip. All of our Standard Poodle sires are microchipped for identity purposes. Darby has Champion German Genes and is stockier than American bred Poodles. He is wide chested, has a shorter, wider muzzle and has a very nice stocky build. He has a heart of Gold and has a wonderful disposition. As of April, 2007 Darby is retired and neutered.
Many people think Darby and our other Poodles are Goldendoodles when their coat is shaggy. That's because our Poodles do not have a long, thin muzzle. Darby's hair has grown back.....it doesn't take long before the grooming process takes place all over again. Easy Coat maintanence can be achieved by a complete shave down at least once every three months.
Many people are under the impression that gender determines size, personality & temperament. Nothing could be further from the truth. Size, personality and temperament is GENE related, not GENDER related. Just because a dog is a male or female does not mean they act according to their gender. Both males and females will mark their territory if not altered. Puppies act according to how they are raised and by whom. Hybrid pups can take after anyone within their ancestry. It is difficult to determine an exact weight or height on hybrid dogs but over the years, we have the experience to give a good estimated height/weight based on past experience. Goldendoodles are fully grown when they turn one year of age, however, the OFA board will not accept any BONE X-RAYS until a canine turns two years of age. It is possible, but unlikely, that they would continue to gain height after the age of 1 yr of age. Any weight gain after a doodle turns one year of age is purely environmental to include spaying or neutering. All of our Goldendoodles are VELCRO., LOVING dogs! They want to be where YOU are! You could not ask for a better mix for a family pet & companion! The majority of our doodles shed very, very little.
The two photos above show the birthing process from start. Fluids come out as the puppy begins to emerge.
There is alot that is involved with the birthing process.
The picture above is of the puppy coming out the "correct" way...head first. As you can see, the puppy is still inside the "sac" as it should be. Sometimes, a puppy will come out in a "breach" position. This means that they come out backwards, feet first. It is very important for a breeder to be available during the birthing process to assist in case of situations like this. While not dangerous if assistance is available, a puppy can die quickly of suffocation if no one is available to help him or her out.
Our pups are quickly placed on a heating pad and they also have a heating lamp up above them to help regulate their body temperature. Puppies can get cold very quickly without protection and die. We sometimes have large litters, and in cases like this, extra feedings are necessary to give all an equal share of milk.
Our Golden Retriever moms are all very healthy and are fed extra portions during their pregnancy. Additional vitamins are a plus when carrying puppies to term. All of our expectant moms are fed Pedigree with loads of extra ingredients placed inside of each meal. Our pups have great muscle tone when born and are very fat and healthy...........unsound puppies can turn into unsound adult dogs....all of our pups are raised indoors with creature comforts!
The boys are up above and the girls are down below. All are very playful, perky and loving! You'll literally trip over these pups because they like to be right under your feet! To say that taking pictures is difficult at times is an understatement!
These lovely doodle babies got their first bath on 3-7-03. They got the full slicker brush/blow dryer treatment and not a single hair flew!!!
DOODLES MAKE GREAT SUPER-HEROS
DOOLES ARE TRUE ANGELS!
No! Our poodles do NOT sport fancy clips; A fancy clip is for sissy dogs. Our poodles are rugged, outdoorsey men who love to get down and dirty! They are not afraid to jump in mud puddles or play in the rain.....our boys are not girly dogs....they're LUMBER-JACKS!
We understand that it is difficult through pictures to tell just how fluffy these pups really are....TRUST ME!
THEY'RE VERY FLUFFY! Our babies coat is soooo soft, they'll slip through your fingers like BUTTER if you are NOT careful! All of our Goldendoodles have cute little ringlets about their ears and at the edges of their legs. As an adult, many of our doodles have a very thick, fluffy, wavy coat! All of our Goldendoodles look just like a Golden Retriever when first born.....however....as they grow, their coat becomes fluffier and some have many waves in their coat. The waves just indicate a thick, shaggy coat. Some even get loose curls about the coat. All have a nice round head and mid-sized muzzle but once their coat is very shaggy, it's hard to tell what shape head they have because their hair can grow out as long as 5 " from the body and each sport a full facial beard with a nice, thick, wide PLUME tail that rides high up over the back.
We thought it would be fun to place our Goldendoodles in front of one of our "Labrador" pillows! These little girls don't mind! They just had another bath on 3-17-03....seems like lately that is all we are doing is bathing doodles! As pups love to do, they have to stand right inside of their food bowl...then step on each other's head with messy paws.....it has been nearly impossible to keep these pups clean! They are just like our Outdoorsey Goldens....they don't mind being wet or having food in their coat....but WE MIND!haha!
MEET THE BOYS
3-19-03: This morning was very busy! Everyone got breakfast......had a nice bath (see below) ...had fun with the blow dryer & slicker brush...and off we went to our vet. We micro-chipped everyone on 3-18-03....so, today was not that bad! I am happy to report that all of our boys (we took only the boys today) are in superb health! All are fecal negative as well as coccidia negative. Our boys weighed in from 4 3/4 to 8 lbs....with the middle guys weighing 5 3/4 & 6 lbs.
3-19-03: They could do WELL without the bath....but we INSIST they have one. At this age, they all fit perfectly inside of our sink!
3-19-03: We rubbed all of the excess water off after wrapping them in a cozy towel......(I love the faces the pups make when you use the blow dryer...they hate this part!...it's like EEEEWWWW! STOP THAT!!!)
After a few funny faces and lots of brushing with the slicker brush......the end results are perfect!
3-19-03: Today was a bit brisk....but not bad! So, I brought the puppies outside for a little playtime. The ground was still a bit damp...but that didn't stop the pups from having a ball with the newspapers! Some wanted to eat the paper while others wanted to read it! See??? I TOLD YOU OUR DOODLES WERE INTELLIGENT!
3-19-03: This afternoon we welcomed some of our new family members.......Mr & Mrs. Hendrix selected "LUKE" and agreed with us that making a selection from these lovely puppies is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE! All are so very loving....outgoing and playful! All of the pups had a ball being outside and seeing some new faces.
Mr & Mrs. Rosenstein had such a hard time that they decided to take TWO! We were happy to see three little puppies going to very loving & happy homes. "Cosmo" & "Zappa" will be living in New York. It's always nice to meet our prospective parents!
In March of '07, Darby sired his 2 last litters. We kept 2 females out of his sired litters with Queenie and Emma. This was so that we could preserve the terrific pedigree that Darby shared with Scisco's Kid. Darby crossed the rainbow bridge unexpectedly, in his sleep, on July 27th, 2008. He will be sadly missed. We hope to continue Darby's legacy through the two female doodles we held back from his last sired litters.
