One of the most fortuitous efforts to produce a breed resulted in the Golden Retriever! The person responsible for this breed was Lord Tweedmouth, who lived just north of the Scottish border along the
Tweed river. There was an increasing interest in dogs that could retrieve but that had a soft "mouth" back in the 1800s. Hunters were seeking a dog that could push through heavy vegetation, withstand and brave cold water and swim quite strongly. The retriever dog was in great demand. Lord Tweedmouth bred Nous, a yellow wavy-coated Retriever (a descendent of the small Newfoundland and the earlier Labrador breeds used by fishermen) to Belle, a Tweed water spaniel....a very popular liver-coated retriever with tightly curled coat.
This pair produced four puppies, which showed promise of being outstanding upland bird dogs. Subsequent crosses were made with other black retrievers, Tweed Spaniels, setters, and even a Bloodhound. To those who think of the Golden Retriever as a purebred dog in today's society, back in the 1800s, the Golden Retriever was a mixed breed dog of many judicious crossings.
This breed was first considered to be a yellow variety of the Flat-coated Retriever. The Golden Retriever was recognized as a separate breed in 1912. A few of the dogs had made their way to America by way of Lord Tweedmouth's sons but the AKC (American kennel club) did not register them as a separate breed until late 1927.
The breed was valued for their hunting abilities so ably produced by the careful blending of foundation stock. They only later became popular as a pet, show dog and obedience competitor. After the Golden Retriever made their transition, they rose to great heights in popularity and remain today as one of the most popular dogs in America.
The Golden Retriever's ranking in AKC is #4; They originated in England and their original name was that of the "Yellow Retriever". The Golden Retriever is everybody's friend. Great with children, they make an excellent family companion. They are apt sporting retrievers and enjoy the water as well as lots of activity. The Golden Retriever, if left ignored and alone for too long of time will result in behavioral problems. They have alot of energy and can tend to be overly exuberant and boisterous.
The Golden Retriever is an excellent group dog and get along well with other dogs to include cats if raised with them while little. The Golden Retriever's achievements in competitive obedience is remarkable. Eager to learn and easy to train, the Golden Retriever, when started out as a puppy, will make one of the most obedient dogs you could ever own. They love to carry items in their mouths and they simply love to dig and roll in the dirt. Your Golden Retriever needs daily exercise and should never be tied up or chained up. Tying or chaining your golden can result in a tragic injury to include death. Also, a chained golden will result in a neurotic golden.
The Golden Retriever, if an outdoor dog, needs plenty of shade and an enormous amount of water. They love to stand in the water and will splash it all out..........so, attention to having water continuously is highly advisable. They are also very smart & can easily learn to get out of your fenced yard whether climbing or digging out.
They enjoy sharing their lives with humans and they have very active minds. Your Golden needs to be brushed several times a week to prevent matting around the back of the ears and along the underbelly, leggings and underneath the tail. The Golden Retriever sheds heavily during the summer months and sheds year round.
Their watchdog ability is nearly zero...but they will bark to let you know if someone is around.
The Golden Retriever is capable of carrying heavy game over land and water. They have alot of stamina and have a powerful head and neck and strong body.
Our Goldens can become quite large should they pick up any Pekay genes....our Goldens can top 125 lbs; We have had some puppies born with a liver colored nose, eye trim and pawpads. This coloration is not abnormal and is quite common since the Golden Retriever was a mixed breed dog way back in its early stages. It is my honest opinion that this coloration comes about from old ancestral genes. We were very happy to see the new Golden Retriever magazine feature Goldens with this coloration as it is more common than you might think. When our puppies have this unique coloration, they have piercing green eyes that remind me of the face of a Chesapeake bay retriever. Their eyes have a very "human" appearance to them and our golden's expressions shine through those light colored eyes! The golden retriever of today looks nothing like it originally did when the breed first began. They started out as mixed breeds, believe it or not! Breeders long ago used various retrievers to get the golden retriever look of today. Dare to be different! If you seek a unique look in your golden, we occasionally have puppies with the above coloring. All of our golden retriever puppies are outgoing, loving and very gentle. They also have a "follow you anywhere" personality! Our Goldens have exceeded our greatest expectations for temperament! We could NOT have asked for better dogs. If you are seeking a family pet who can keep up with your family's active life, then a Golden Retriever is for you! They completely enjoy the water....staying active and being a part of your family. Super smart....the Golden Retriever can also be too smart for their own good. Their ability to remember is quite great. Golden Retrievers make great therapy dogs....love to cuddle and make all around great companion dogs. We breed purebred Golden Retrievers on occasion. We have bred Golden Retrievers since 1996 and of course, as time has passed, our Goldens age. Some have crossed the rainbow bridge over the years and some have been removed from our breeding program due to age......so of course, since we completely love the lineage we have in our Goldens, we continue to breed them for purebred Goldens on occasion to keep our lineage moving forward.
Our original Golden Retriever, Gruffy, had distant Pekay lineage. He crossed the rainbow bridge at the age of 14 in early 2006. Pekay Kennel was founded by two women back in the 1960's, out of Georgia who continue, to this day, to produce and still show champion Goldens. This means that our Goldens were born right here in the good ole USA! Although all of our Goldens have AKC pedigrees, registrations and lineage, we DO NOT participate with AKC because of the poor quality in service and their continued sky rocketing prices. Years ago, we transferred all of our AKC registered dogs to UNIVERSAL KENNEL CLUB and moved away from AKC entirely.
We switched over to the Universal Kennel Club because of their outstanding service. Their quality, professional and personal service can not be beat! All of our Goldens enjoy playing in water, either by sitting in a bucket of water, being in a swimming pool or playing with the garden hose! None of our Goldens have ever shown signs of hip dysplasia, cancer, eye problems or heart problems. Our breeding stock of Goldens has always been hardy and very healthy. Our Goldens get along great in a group, but can become a problem at times with too much digging and the majority of the time, they get along very well with each other. When a female is in heat, however, trouble can brew. So it is important if you are going to own 2 of the same gender, to have them spayed or neutered if you desire to alleviate this kind of issue. Golden Retrievers do enjoy tugging on everything as well as doing alot of chewing! They are also notorious shedders!!! Year round! But, they are overall, wonderful dogs and great companions. Golden Retrievers are all around good natured dogs who get along well with other animals and are friendly with strangers. they ARE TERRIFIC DOGS FOR CHILDREN! We have found that males are easier to housebreak than females but there is NO difference in temperament between a male or female. Dogs spayed or neutered prior to the age of six months have reduced chances of lifting the leg or showing other unwanted behaviors.

To prevent behavioral problems, start obedience training once your puppy has competed its puppy vaccines. Our Goldens are eager beavers and are super easy to train! Young puppies are very impressionable and will gladly learn for treats. We crate train our puppies once they are weaned. We begin paper training from the age of 3 weeks. Housebreaking is simple if you, the human, place your new puppy on a schedule and consistent routine
and take him or her out just 10 minutes after they eating or drinking. Puppies become confused if you are adament one day and relaxed another. We DO NOT advise that you yell, scream, shout or hit your new puppy into submission. Negative training brings about a scared, timid golden that will become afraid of you and will literally tinkle just in sheer fear. Giving your new pup treats, training with positive reinforcement and having a consistent schedule will assure good behavior as well as quick housebreaking. Puppy obedience classes are recommended for a well behaved family pet.
Never allow your Golden puppy to roam the neighborhood and never leave your puppy unattended. A new puppy's home is a dangerous place if you do not protect your puppy from household cleaners, small chewable toys, string, gum, candy or objects that can be easily swallowed. Please also keep your electrical cords up off the floor and watch your new puppy as you would a toddler. They are very curious and do not know any better. Leash break your new puppy as soon as possible. There are many wonderful canine books and videos on the market to teach you how to be a good pet owner.

Owning a well behaved pet of any breed starts with you, the owner! Responsible canine owners learn as much as they can about the breed they are purchasing....learn proper ways of housebreaking & crate-training. Golden Retrievers do very well in canine obedience if you have the available time and funds. Read as much as you can about the breed of your choice before you buy. Purchasing a canine should be a lifetime commitment and not a spur of the moment decision. Everyone in your immediate family should agree of the canine selection so that everyone is happy with their new choice. There are too many homeless canines from spontaneous purchases. Give careful thought that you have the funds to own and care for a dog, enough space to allow him or her to run around in and enough time to commit to your new friend. Your new puppy will take considerable time out of your hectic schedule and will need to be placed on a schedule like that of an infant. Your dog will love you more if you are a responsible canine owner who is consistent, loving and caring.

LOOK AT SOME OF THE NAMES WE HAVE IN OUR LINEAGE! Many OFA good ancestors! *PEKAY'S PEPPERMINT SCHNAPPS *PEKAY'S ROOT BEER SCHAPPS (OFA) *CHAMPION WINGSONG MAKER'S MARK *CHAMPION PEKAY'S HOT TODDY (COMPANION DOG) *CHAMPION PEKAY'S MARCH THROUGH GEORGIA (MASTER HUNTER) *GOLDEN RIGGINS OF HEMLOCK (UTILITY DOG) *SANCY'S FLAMING FORREST (COMPANION DOG).
Our golden retrievers are very easy to train! Quick to housebreak! Are extra great companion dogs whether on or off the field!

Maintaining your golden retriever is quite simple providing you have the time! A Golden Retriever has long feathering about the legs, under the belly, underneath the tail and the hair can become matted behind the ears if care is not taken. Their coat sheds heavily throughout the year, so "fly away" hair can become a problem for those with allergies. Using a slicker brush once or twice a week will remove all excess hair as well as help untangle the coat. Overlong nails will ruin the tight, cat-footed appearance of the feet...so it is important to keep the nails trimmed. Ears are important to keep dry and trim excess hair so that your pup will not get an ear infection. Bacteria can grow quite easily if your pup enjoys swimming......so it is very important that you not only clean, but dry the inside of your canine's ears after having contact with water.
Regular grooming of your canine can be a pleasant experience for both you and your dog providing you start the grooming experience early and make it a habit. Goldens are notorious shedders and it is year round! If you have allergies or are sensitive to dog hairs...it is very important that you either NOT purchase a golden retriever or you keep your canine outside. They are highly active dogs with energy requirements...so the golden retriever IS NOT for the couch potato or the lazy. Treats are wonderful for your canine and serving up fresh fruit make for healthy treats! Try apples, pears, grapes, plums and even slices of orange. Goldens can acquire a taste for these delicious fruits and they are very healthy and nutritious! Some Goldens can get skin problems and it can be from sudden allergies to their diet or it can be from the environment. Skin problems in Goldens are NOT uncommon although few are inherited. Goldens do get dry skin on occasion. Some can become suddenly allergic to fleas...so a good flea control is essential! Try "Program" which is a once a month flea control tablet. It works much better than some fluids that are topical. One third of all allergies in dogs are caused by substances in foods. Even if your canine has been eating the same food for years....it can suddenly develop an allergy to it. Your vet may also carry a dog food that is specifically for allergies or you can click HERE to contact companies who carry great brands of food.
Goldens are prone to cataracts....so you may want to have his or her eyes checked with each yearly exam. Although large breed dogs in general are more susceptible to chronic hip dysplasia.......CHD is a polygenic disease which makes it more difficult to locate the defective genes and to predict how the disease will present itself in the parents and offspring. In CHD, clear or mildly affected parents can produce severely affected pups and vice versa. Testing breeding dogs does not, in any way, prevent them from passing on defective silent genes to their offspring....but there is hope for the future! Researchers at Cornell are studying the genetic components of this disease to hopefully find molecular genetic markers or panel of markers for susceptible dogs. We DO NOT test our dogs for dysplasia because breeding dogs can be carriers and there are no known tests at this time to show whether a breeding dog is a carrier of a silent defective polygenic gene. Because we have 8 generations of Goldens on our premises, Our percentage of having defective offspring is very low. Even though breeders have their Goldens tested for such diseases, in NO WAY does this guarantee that any of their dogs' offspring will be unaffected. It ALSO DOES NOT show or stipulate that the offspring does not carry the markers for CHD. Dogs can be carriers and never show signs of hip dysplasia but turn around and pass it on to 1 or 2 of their offspring some time through any number of litters or the dog could have two or three litters and never pass the gene until the fourth litter is born. Researchers have NOT figured out exactly how the genetic structure for hip dysplasia really works and therefore it is a very difficult disease to determine or prevent. As with any living thing, there ARE NO GUARANTEES IN LIFE. Some dogs can live for eons without a single incident of disease or health issue....and then some can get everything that could possibly come its way. Health issues in dogs is very much like health issues in people. Not every health issue is genetic and there is no way to know which sibling will come down sometime in their life with a health issue. Just like you may always be the sickly person in your family and everyone else is as healthy as an ox!
Keeping your golden healthy is as important as keeping yourself healthy! With proper maintenance, your dog can live a very long and healthy life! Neglect in any shape or form will cause your dog to lead a short life.
Your golden is very happy to spend as much time with you as possible. Not only is it important to keep your golden's body in shape, but they have an active mind and need alot of stimulation! Mental games are as much fun as active games..............
When a customer asks us how long will a Golden Retriever live.....our answer is........as long as you maintain your dog in the utmost fashion, your golden should live quite a long time. Dogs' organs do age much quicker than those of a human.....so to expect your golden to live as long as yourself is unrealistic. They can live up to 13 years or even longer.

Some of you have been asking us if our golden retrievers are British, English or American. All of our Golden Retrievers were born in America, which makes them purebred Americans. Just because a golden retriever has a large head and is lighter in color does not mean it came from a different country. Golden Retrievers were bred for the field. All original Golden Retrievers had a field style. The majority of our Golden Retrievers maintain the look and appearance of what the original Golden Retriever looked like. The field was their original purpose. Over the years, Goldens have been bred to have many styles based on the personal preferences of their breeder. Some like the light colored Goldens and some like the darker ones. Some like the field style, some like those with a round head and some like the box style. Various styles come about by breeding a particular dog to another particular dog with the LOOK that they are trying to achieve in their puppies. It has NOTHING to do with them being British, English or American. Unless a breeder has imported their dog from another country.....unless their puppies were born outside of the United States....their dogs are American. The style of a dog does NOT determine the dog's origin. British or English Goldens will have UKC or UK documentation. Most European canine registration is pink in color. If their breeder can not produce such documents & their Goldens are registered with AKC, they are American! Now there are Golden Retrievers who are nearly snow white and are called "British Whites" or "English Goldens" and we do presently have some Golden Retrievers who are white and beautiful. However, when we use the term "English", it is a breeder's term. All of our Golden Retrievers have been born and raised here. As of 2006, we have very few of our original Golden Retriever dogs that we started out with back in 1996. Due to old age, some have already crossed the rainbow bridge...but we do have their grand-children and we continue to strive for excellence in producing sound, intelligent and extremely family oriented Golden Retrievers as the years go by. We have traveled abroad and
We met many breeders as well as visited many canine show/trial event while over-seas. We are very familiar with European Kennel Clubs and their registration documents. Your dog is an AMERICAN with European ancestors if their ancestors originated from Europe but your dog was born and whelped in the good ole' US of A. ANY DOG REGISTERED & BRED IN THE UNITED STATES IS 100% AMERICAN.
